For the last two nights, I’ve been able to sleep right through the night – if we had any aftershocks, I didn’t feel them. Although the very shallow (6km depth) 5.1 aftershock that hit just before 8am woke me – the shaking in that one was very similar to the big earthquake. That aftershock resulted in the State of Emergency, which would’ve been lifted at around 12pm, being extended for another week and Riccarton Mall being closed. This meant that in order for my flatmate and I to get something to eat, we had to go to McDonalds, which wasn’t closed. And it’s bad if you have to reply on fast food for your meals.

We no longer have to boil our drinking water so this means we can actually do our dishes that we haven’t been able to do since Saturday. I have to send my mother a text message every day so she can pass it on to one of my aunts so they can tell my grandmother that I am fine – because my grandmother didn’t believe my mother when she told her that I was fine. My mother also told me that she (my grandmother) actually wanted to send me some groceries – that’s the kind of thing that she does.

I will say that the novelty of the aftershocks is definitely wearing off and that I just want them to fuck off.

As it stands at the moment, I am currently running on three hours sleep after what would have to be one of the worst wake up calls one could ever experience.

Strong earthquake rocks New Zealand’s South Island

What woke me up wasn’t the shaking – it was the noise beforehand. Then the shaking started and it went on for what felt like forever. A few things fell over in my bedroom but on the whole, my flatmate and I are fine. We haven’t lost anything – although the only thing we probably will lose will be cellphone reception.

I have not long returned from a trip into the CBD to check out the damage there for myself. A lot of the CBD is cordoned off because of the damage already sustained by various buildings and the authorities want to eliminate the risk of any injuries. They’ve really kicked into high gear which is good to see. Power is out in the CBD so the only way people can buy things is with cash – something I didn’t think about until I felt the need to get something then realise I couldn’t!

Power, for the most part, is down throughout most of Christchurch although not in my suburb. The mall where I work was closed before so I don’t know when it will open again or even if I have to go to work today. I can’t have a shower or do any washing because our water pressure isn’t as great as it usually is but that is to be expected when sewage and water pipes throughout the city are damaged. The city’s buses aren’t running either. We’re still having aftershocks and can expect them for a while yet.

Not something I really want to experience again any time soon, that’s for sure.

As it happens, I happen to be nursing a very bad head cold – full on colds suck monkey’s balls, I have decided. I woke up on Friday with a somewhat sore throat and suspected that I was coming down with something. Yesterday, I woke up with a slightly sorer throat, a very blocked nose and a very fluffy feeling head. I was debating whether to go to work or not but realised that I couldn’t afford not to be there so I went. The one compensation I had was that I was allowed to go home just over an hour early. I have work again tomorrow so I’m hoping that I am feeling a little bit better compared to today.

I managed to get through the first season of Twin Peaks on Friday night and yesterday and am currently settling in for a Karate Kid marathon. In between doing housework, haha.

In around 11 hours or so, I will be on a Boeing 737 on its way to Auckland. This will be my second time to Auckland – and second time there for wrestling, surprise surprise.

I thought about doing my packing when I got home from work but that was as far as I got. I had another priority at the time – demoulding a pair of shoes that I’m taking up with me (probably wearing up!). At least they don’t smell like vinegar anymore, hehe. Knowing me, I’ll still be packing when I’m heading to the airport! I’m only away for two nights and I’ll be taking enough stuff with me to last a friggin week but that is what I normally do, haha.

Now, I can say that both the show as well as the Meet and Greet before the show are TOMORROW!!! And for once, I’ll be in the same city as the one and only Aunty Gok – Gok Wan! I love that man! This will also mark my first trip out of Christchurch since I returned in March! Hard to believe that I’ve nearly been here six months. Time has certainly flown, pardon the pun!

Since my last post about the job interview I had, things have been pretty good for me. I got the job (coming home with an employment agreement with my hours on it was pretty much a giveaway) and started training the following day. I got paid for the training which was good because the money went towards our massive June power bill ($366 with prompt payment discount, than you very much). How the bill was that big I have no idea.

I now have a new laptop because of the old one basically dying. I now have World of Warcraft (level 15 Tauren Druid at the moment) and The Sims 3 which I’m liking.

Yes, things have been going well for me. And in four weeks, I will be on my way to Auckland for the WWE show!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been turning into a night owl. Before, 1am would be about my limit when it came to going to sleep but now…

Honestly, I could be up all night now. I’m making myself go to sleep at around 4am even though I only feel slightly tired and taking my usual 8 or so hours sleep into account, this now means I’m waking up around lunchtime. I play the Sims on my laptop, watch DVDs on my laptop and surf the net just to try to get tired enough to want to go to sleep. I could read in bed but I don’t want to leave my light on to all hours of the night/morning.

When I was in high school, if I had a late night, I’d be awake around 7am regardless. There was one time in my final year of high school where I went to bed at 5.30am on a Monday morning (because I’d been up watching a live sporting event) and got up at 7am to go to school. I had that one and a half hours sleep because I thought if I didn’t, I’d fall asleep during school. I did pay for it in that I looked extremely tired but I went to bed at my normal time that night.

I don’t know why I’ve turned into a night owl. There could be an underlying issue behind it which would mean a trip to the doctors but I can’t afford that because of a double blow on my unemployment benefit. Hell, I can’t afford to do anything unless I find a job and soon. Once my share of the rent is paid, what money I do have left goes either towards my share of the flat bills, my own bills, food and treats for myself. Then I feel bad for having to decide whether I’m warm or I should eat. I probably should go to WINZ again and tell them what the story is. At the moment, I’m worse off than what I was in Invercargill (and working too) and I’m finding myself questioning why I’m here. Not necessarily why I’m living where I am now but I’m wondering what my true purpose is.

I’m weird. I’m an Aquarian after all.
